It is no coincidence that most diseases come from drinking water, especially in the least developed countries.

But what about water in urban areas?

Have you ever wondered which water filter to choose between a countertop, an under-sink, a tap filter etc.?

You are in the right place to be informed.

As you have heard dozens of times in the past, the human body is made up mostly of water.

It is no coincidence that most diseases come from drinking water, especially in the least developed countries.

But what about water in urban areas?

Most of us decided to install a water filter to protect our family from the various harmful substances that pollute water and, consequently, ourselves.

In this article, we do not want to analyze the benefits of water filters, as we have already written several articles on this topic.

We will be more specific and help you choose among the most classic categories of filters on the market, ranging from the cheapest to the most expensive.

Guide: water filter prices.

Pitchers with water filter - Do you wonder which the best pitcher with water filter is?

The pitchers with water filter are basically pitchers that have a built-in activated carbon filter. You fill the top of the pitcher with water, and so the water is forced due to its weight to pass through the filter. Some pitchers, such as the Primato water filter pitcher, have an activated carbon filter as well as a descaling filter. Primato and Britta pitchers are very popular in Greece.

Disadvantages

  • You need to replace the filter every 2 months.
  • The water needs 2 to 5 minutes to be filtered.

Advantages

  • It is the most economical solution.
  • You can put it in the fridge so that you have cool filtered water.

Tap water filters are relatively easy to connect to your kitchen tap. They have an activated carbon filter that reduces several of the harmful substances in the water. Most devices available in the market have a filtered / unfiltered water switch. This means that you can wash the dishes with unfiltered water and switch to filtered water only when you want to drink it.

The filter should normally be replaced every 3 months.

Disadvantages

  • It takes up a lot of space in the tap and is not recommended for taps that are quite low.
  • After a few years, you will need to buy a new device, as the scale harm the flanges of the device.

Advantages

  • You instantly drink clean, filtered water.
  • There is a wide variety of cartridges available for these devices.

Countertop water filters, as their name suggests, are quite easily connected to the kitchen tap and are placed on the kitchen counter. The diverter is connected to your tap and has a filtered / unfiltered water switch. Various models and brands have been on the market for several years. It is one of the most classic filters and you can find in the market a wide variety of cartridges. Yoy had better choose American or English cartridges, which are usually made of pressurized activated carbon which reduces most of the harmful substances in the water. Depending on the problem in your area, you can install a single, double or even triple countertop water filter. You can connect it yourself as well as change the cartridges. The replacement filter should be changed every year.

Disadvantages

  • It takes up a lot of space on the kitchen counter, especially the double and triple systems.
  • Many "experts" will charge you unreasonable prices or try to sell you counterfeit products. Do a market research yourself and choose the filter that is "value for money", assessing both the device, the cartridge and, most importantly, the customer service quality.

Advantages

  • You instantly drink clean, filtered water.
  • There is a wide variety of cartridges available for these devices.

There are 2 types of under-sink filters:

Α) Water filters connected directly to the kitchen cold water supply . This practically means that every time you turn on your tap in the cold water, the running water will be filtered. A countertop filter can be single, double or triple, depending on the specific problem in your area. The cartridge should be replaced every 9-11 months depending on its use.

Disadvantages

  • The spare filter may not last for a year, as you use filtered water to wash the dishes etc.
  • Because water inlet and outlet are 1/2 inch (ie water runs fast), you cannot put very narrow filters.

Advantages

  • It does not take up space on the kitchen counter.
  • It is quite easy to istall. All you need is a wrench.

Β) Devices connected to their own tap. Under-sink water filters can be single, double or triple depending on the specific problem in your area. The cartridge is replaced every year. They are connected to their own tap. Just turn on the tap switch and you will immediately have fresh filtered water.

Disadvantages

  • The main disadvantage in this case is that you have to make a hole (1cm diameter) in your kitchen counter.
  • Most people have this filter installed by a plumber. However, if you are a bit skillful, we believe you can do it on your own!

Advantages

  • You instantly drink clean, filtered water from the filter tap.
  • There is a wide variety of cartridges available for these devices.

Reverse osmosis water filtration systems, despite being installed under the kitchen sink, do not belong to this category, as they use a different and special technology. Reverse osmosis is still the best water filtration system in the world. It can filter out all substances harmful to the human body, even viruses and bacteria, as well as all particles larger than 0.0001 microns (millimeters). It is connected to its own tap only for filtered water. Because water runs very slowly through such a narrow filter, reverse osmosis includes a water storage tank. So when you turn on the filter tap, the water comes out of the tank. Depending on the problem in your area, reverse osmosis can have an ultraviolet lamp, a metal enrichment filter and various other filters. It completely reduces conductivity and removes salts, and it is the ideal solution for islands. You should be very careful when you purchase a reverse osmosis system. Make sure the device comes with a warranty. Do not buy very cheap reverse osmosis systems, as the pressure on the device is very high and there is always the risk of it breaking, resulting in water running in the house. The filters should be replaced every year, except for the membrane which should be replaced every 2 years.

Disadvantages

  • The main disadvantage is the cost. The price of a good reverse osmosis system starts at 350 € and reaches up to 3000 € for the most professional ones.
  • Most people have this filter installed by a plumber. However, if you are a bit skillful, we believe you can do it on your own!
